The third season seems to be the charm for Darwin Núñez at Liverpool and, although the Uruguayan has a contract until 2028, the club could let him go in the next European summer market despite a compromised financial situation in recent years and having rejected offers for the Uruguayan national team striker in the last transfer window.
For the 2023/24 season, the English team announced the highest loss of the last decade, reaching a negative of 69 million euros adding up the last three campaigns. According to Jenny Beacham, financial director of the Reds, this does not worry the club's coffers too much because they are far from the limit of 105M established by the Premier League and they assure that the deficit balance was due to the fact that the team played in the Europa League last season. In the current campaign, those led by Arne Slot are on track to win the Premier and qualified first in the Champions League , so the numbers would improve considerably for the next year; which might not have Darwin Núñez.
Although in the last window Liverpool rejected a verbal offer of 58,000,000 from Al-Nassr , who ended up taking Jhon Duran for 65M, the Reds would be willing to listen to offers for the Uruguayan who is being talked about in Saudi football and other markets.
Al-Hilal , who no longer have Neymar, are reportedly willing to bid for Nunez, and there are also plans from Italy and Spain . According to English media, Milan could look for the Uruguayan if Rafael Leão does not continue , and Hansi Flick is looking for an alternative to Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona . The possibility of Atlético de Madrid seems less likely because, despite Diego Simeone having confessed to being a fan of Nunez, the sporting director Miguel Angel Gil Marin said that they are not looking for a striker.
What makes Darwin's departure more feasible is that he is not being considered by Arne Slot, his preferred choice is Cody Gakpo and the Uruguayan only averages 30 minutes per game in 2025.
Liverpool's target to replace Darwin Núñez:
According to English media, Liverpool would only let Núñez go if they have a replacement, and there is already one name in the mix. João Pedro , a 23-year-old Brazilian striker, has a contract until 2028, but Brighton would be willing to negotiate him for double the £30M they paid for him.
