The 2024/25 season was tipped to be the end of an era at Liverpool , with Jürgen Klopp 's departure still leaving some old-guard players in the squad, but most of them in the final year of their contracts. Mo Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all Reds legends who could leave this summer.

However, the season began and Liverpool were a machine. The Reds will be Premier League champions , barring a catastrophe in these final months of the season, and they had been performing fantastically in the Champions League , which gave fans hope. Sadly for them, PSG gave them a reality check and eliminated them in the Round of 16. While that wasn't the hardest blow for the fans, there was more to come.

And once the Reds were eliminated at Anfield, a video began to go viral on social media where Virgil Van Dijk can be seen, upon entering the locker room, in conversation with Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Luis Campos , president and sporting director of PSG , respectively.

Virgil's future is unknown , and although at some point during the season a renewal seemed closer, this scene between the Reds captain and the Parisian team's directors set off alarm bells for the fans at Anfield, and deepened the pain of elimination from the Champions League.

Since joining the club in January 2018, Virgil has become a fixture and symbol for the Reds. A Champions League winner, a Premier League winner , and at least once in every cup he played for Liverpool, he has played over 300 games for the club and has a legendary unbeaten run at Anfield. He will be in no short supply of offers to take him on a new path this summer.

If, at 33, Van Dijk is close to ending his time at Liverpool, no one can blame one of the best central defenders in the history of the Premier League.
