Henderson could return to Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16 against AS Monaco
Jordan Henderson, the former Liverpool captain, could face his old club in the Champions League Round of 16. After leaving Anfield to join Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League in the summer of 2023, Henderson struggled to adjust to life in the Middle East and terminated his contract halfway through the season.
He returned to Europe with Ajax, where he made a good impression in the Eredivisie, starting in 24 games this season. However, Henderson’s time in Amsterdam is about to end, as AS Monaco is close to finalizing a permanent deal to sign the 34-year-old midfielder. This move would also mark Henderson’s return to the Champions League, a competition he hasn’t played in since his time at Liverpool.
Monaco, who finished 17th in the new Champions League format, will need to get through a playoff tie to reach the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Liverpool has already secured their spot in the next phase after topping their group, thus avoiding additional playoff games.
The playoff draw will take place on January 31, and Liverpool still doesn’t know who their opponent will be. A potential matchup with Monaco and Henderson in March could be an emotional return for the former Reds captain to Anfield.
The Round of 16 draw will take place on February 21, which will increase the anticipation for this exciting potential clash.
