Liverpool’s Plan for Federico Chiesa After His Performance Against PSV
With a makeshift squad in Wednesday’s Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven, there were always going to be standout players. Federico Chiesa was undoubtedly among them, delivering an impressive performance despite Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat.
The Italian was involved in both of Liverpool’s goals on a night when Arne Slot’s side secured top spot in the group despite the loss. Chiesa was caught by Joey Veerman’s boot when the PSV midfielder lost possession in the first half, allowing the Liverpool forward to step in and shield the ball before Veerman could clear. The former Juventus and Fiorentina star set up the second goal, but Walter Benítez saved his shot before Harvey Elliott converted the rebound. Chiesa also completed more dribbles and had more touches in the opponent’s box than any other player that night.
Perhaps most encouragingly, in just his second start for the Reds, Chiesa played the full 90 minutes, showing he has fully overcome the injury troubles that plagued his early months on Merseyside after his summer transfer.
For that reason, Joe Cole believes Slot has an additional asset in his squad for the second half of the season. “He was one of the brightest young players in Europe before his injuries,” the former midfielder said during TNT Sports' post-match coverage.
“Liverpool have him, they’ve managed him well, and he’s shown to be very fit and involved in the game. He will have a role to play in the title race and the latter stages of the Champions League. He’s another option for Arne Slot, and all these young players who have come in have done well.”
That view was echoed by another former Liverpool midfielder. “You can see that Federico Chiesa, despite all his injury concerns, still has the talent,” said Steve McManaman, who was on commentary duty for TNT in Eindhoven. “A couple of great passes over the top, control with his right foot—only the final ball was missing.”
“But he looked sharp and fit. He just needs to play more games. He started today, got on the ball, and his fitness seems good. But even so, you can’t take risks. Federico Chiesa had a strong performance tonight.”
