One person who could have is Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven. The Tottenham defender has been linked with Liverpool multiple times in the past with his agent even weighing in on the matter.

The connection? Current Liverpool manager Arne Slot. Slot tried to sign Van de Ven not once, but twice during his time at AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.

Both attempts failed, and Van de Ven ended up at Wolfsburg before joining Tottenham in 2023.

Now, the Dutch defender has opened up about what could have been.

Van de Ven’s rise in football has been impressive. He’s known for his speed, strength, and composure on the ball.

At just 23, he’s already a key player for Tottenham. But his career could have taken a very different path.

Slot, who is now thriving at Liverpool, has always been a big admirer of Van de Ven.

The defender recently shared his thoughts on how close he came to joining Slot’s teams in the past.

Van de Ven didn’t hold back when discussing his near-misses with Slot.

He said, “Arne Slot wanted to sign me for AZ when he saw me play in the first season at Volendam. The club refused to sell me, and I had to accept that they would not let me go.”

He added, “When he was at Feyenoord, he tried to sign me too, but by then I had already signed for Wolfsburg in Germany.”

The defender also reflected on how things might have turned out if he had joined Slot earlier.

He mused, “Do I think I would be playing for Liverpool now if I would have joined Slot at Feyenoord? That would have been some kind of fate.”

Van de Ven had nothing but praise for Slot’s impact at Liverpool.

He said, “Slot is doing really well. Liverpool is now a fantastic team, and he is showing again what a brilliant coach he is.”

He also shared his admiration for Slot’s coaching style, saying, “Every player who has worked under Slot will tell you great things about him.”

“In the few talks I had with him at the time, I got a great feeling about his managerial style, his coaching, and his ideas in football. He really, really sees the game well.”

The Dutch defender even revealed that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has been a mentor to him.

He said, “I really would not mind playing next to Virgil in defence. He is such a fabulous defender and doing great at Liverpool.”

Van de Ven added, “I learn a lot from him. When we’ve played against Liverpool with Tottenham, Virgil still gives me tips after the game!”

“He says things like, ‘Maybe you could have done this or that’ in certain situations. It shows he wants to help me improve my game.”

For now, Van de Ven is focused on helping Tottenham end their trophy drought.

But his comments have certainly given Liverpool fans something to think about.

What if Slot had managed to sign him all those years ago? It’s a fascinating “what if” in football.
