Abel Ferreira downplays Klopp’s work at Liverpool and defends his tenure at Palmeiras

A draw that sparked controversy

Palmeiras are not going through their best moment, and on Tuesday, they were held to a goalless draw against Red Bull Bragantino. The team’s manager, Abel Ferreira, was booed at the end of the match and, in his post-game press conference, expressed his frustration with some bold statements.

Ferreira takes a dig at Klopp

During his remarks, Ferreira even referenced Jürgen Klopp, who was present at the stadium to watch the match. Without hesitation, the Palmeiras coach downplayed the German’s achievements during his highly successful tenure at Liverpool.

It is worth noting that Klopp has won a Premier League, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a Community Shield, a UEFA Super Cup, and a Club World Cup with the Reds. However, Ferreira suggested that his own work at Palmeiras has been even more remarkable.

"We’ve won more titles than Klopp"

In a statement that caught many by surprise, the Portuguese manager directly compared his success to that of Klopp:

"Today, a gentleman named Klopp was at the stadium. He has won fewer titles in eight years than we have in five years at Palmeiras. So don’t talk to me about hunger for trophies. I am a project-driven manager, and that will not change."

Proud of Palmeiras and his project

Beyond the comparison with Klopp, Ferreira made it clear that he fully identifies with Palmeiras and is unfazed by external criticism.

"I am here because I want to win and be successful. For me, Palmeiras is, by far, the best club. They recognise me, pay me on time, and give me the opportunity to keep winning. We have built an identity, and we accept the criticism that comes, like today. But the external criticism will not affect us."

Statements that will spark debate

The Portuguese manager’s words are sure to generate discussions in the football world. While Palmeiras strive to regain their best form, his comparison with Klopp may provoke reactions both in Brazil and across Europe.
