A key player signals to the bench, then the physios rush on. The substitution board goes up and then you hold your breath hoping it’s not too serious.
Injuries are part of the game, but some players are simply too important to lose.
Liverpool’s latest win over Bournemouth had all the right elements. A solid performance, another goal-scoring display from Mohamed Salah, and three points in the bag.
But there was also a moment that left fans concerned.
With 20 minutes left, Trent Alexander-Arnold went down. He sat on the pitch and told the coaching staff he had to come off.
Trent Alexander-Arnold to undergo scan for injury
The Athletic reports that the right-back will undergo a scan to determine the extent of his injury.
Head coach Arne Slot addressed the situation after the match. “The situation was that Trent said to me, ‘You have to take me off,’ and he sat on the floor,” Slot said.
“He felt something. I can’t tell you exactly what or how bad it is because it’s only an hour after the game.”
Slot also made it clear that Alexander-Arnold is unlikely to play in Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham.
“I would be surprised if he plays on Thursday,” he said. “Let’s hope he’s back with us as soon as possible.”
Losing Alexander-Arnold is a blow. His presence in Liverpool’s defense and attack is crucial.
Conor Bradley, who impressed off the bench, may have to step up. But for now, Liverpool waits. The scan will reveal just how bad the injury is. Fans will be hoping for the best.
