Julian Ward has already extend the contract of one of Jürgen Klopp's key men, Mohamed Salah, and now he must do the same with another Liverpool star. Stability and continuity in football are two factors that are often undermined. Of course, every team needs to evolve, but there must also be an appropriate balance between evolving and chopping and changing so constantly that the changes swallow the club into a gaping black hole or the perpetual wheel of a never-ending cycle.

Therefore, as Liverpool embark on a new dawn, it is just as important for the club to bring in the right personnel as to determine who should stay on to ensure the work can go on in the same way. This summer saw Julian Ward determine that Mohamed Salah is the player to bring Liverpool that stability, while Sadio Mané was not. But while the club's new sporting director has made some important decisions already, there is one that still faces him in the next 11 months.

Just like the aforementioned duo, Roberto Firmino's contract also expires in 2023, less than a year now. But unlike the previous two Liverpool stars, the Brazilian's future has not been a hotly-debated topic on social media. Most supporters will feel indifferent about whether Firmino decides to find pastures new next summer or extends his stay at Anfield eight years after arriving from Hoffenheim for £29m.

But that is not how Julian Ward should approach contract negotiations. Firmino is one of those players who simply has to stay at the club, because not only does he offer stability but he will also be capable of providing depth and quality long into the twilight of his career.

Juventus want to Firmino

Firmino is an important character in the dressing room, and now one of Liverpool's most experienced players who has been there in three separate Champions League finals and has been with Jürgen Klopp from the beginning of his reign.

His presence lights up the dressing room, and he has struck up an important friendship with the club's strong South American contingent. Considering the Reds' new recruits in Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez are still settling in, having someone like Firmino to guide them along the way could be important in how they adjust to life at the club.
