Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at St James' Park after conceding a goal and suffering the dismissal of captain Virgil van Dijk just three minutes into the first half. An hour remained but Newcastle failed to seal the win and Darwin Nunez gave the Reds an incredible victory with two late goals, the second in stoppage time. But at the other end of the pitch, Anthony Gordon was already wreaking havoc on the Reds' defence.
The referee had just started the game when he had given Trent Alexander-Arnold a second yellow card for bringing him down as he was running away. Gordon was at the forefront of Newcastle's attack throughout the game and was involved in all the key plays. The former Everton man opened the scoring in the 25th minute from a mistake by the misguided Alexander-Arnold, who failed to control Mohamed Salah's delayed pass in the face of home pressure and Gordon broke free alone before beating Alisson to the ball.
After the break Newcastle, always with Gordon as a danger generator, had several chances to score, but they did not do it and Liverpool grew with the entry of Diogo Jota, who gave sense to their game. Jota found Darwin Nunez, whom the manager had just brought on, and the Uruguayan took advantage of a mistake in Sven Botman's control to lash a cross past Pope (81'). b Not only did Liverpool never give up, but they were not satisfied and in stoppage time Darwin, assisted by Salah, won the back of the defence and finished off the unexpected outcome of the game with another unstoppable strike.
Darwin Nunez was the centre of attention in the post-game interviews even though he suffered from a language problem. He still can't speak English and had to be helped by Alisson and Trent Alexader-Arnold, something that got people talking, especially on social media.
