He arrived with a low profile at Liverpool in 2014 from Southampton in a signing that did not cause much of a stir. But he stayed with the club until 2020 with a total of 178 games played between Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Cup and Champions League, scoring 22 goals despite not being a centre forward.
Adam Lallana is a historic player for the Reds because he was part of a difficult period for the team until before the arrival of German coach Jürgen Klopp. But then he entered the club's history with the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020, with which he also said goodbye to Anfield.
Luis Diaz's goal was useless, harsh words after Napoli debacle
Mohamed Salah no longer untouchable for Jürgen Klopp
The 34-year-old midfielder was having a difficult time with Brighton and Hove Albion, where he joined in 2020 and has since made 59 appearances with one goal. He made just three appearances in the current Premier League season, having been injured on 21 August with a muscle problem that kept him off the field.
That's why the idea of retirement crossed his mind during the last few days because he was no longer enjoying his time as a footballer that started in 2007 with Southampton. When the possibility of becoming Brighton's new manager after the departure of Graham Potter came up, he didn't think too much about it.
Having been chosen as the new manager to replace Potter who left for Chelsea, Lallana's debut in the dugout will have to wait. It looked set to be this Saturday at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth, but that will not be the case. His home debut will be on Saturday 17 September at The American Express Community Stadium against Crystal Palace.
