Being knocked out of the Champions League after being one of the title favourites for the last five years has been Liverpool's worst news this season. Jürgen Klopp has failed to get the team on a consistent run of rewarding results and this has meant the Reds have had to settle for a place in next season's Europa League.
As a result, a process of renewal has already begun at Anfield that has seen the departures of Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino, Oxlade Chamberlain and James Milner... but also the signing of Alexis Mac Allister, who has generated a lot of excitement. The Argentinian World Cup winner has been one of the big names in the market since the end of January and Klopp is the manager who has finally managed to convince the 24-year-old.
However, Jürgen's idea to restructure his creative line goes beyond having Mac-Allister and Thiago Alcántara, the La Masia-trained gem who was discarded by Barça. The German coach has reportedly asked Liverpool's board to make a move to Nice, with Khéphren Thuram a key player. The 22-year-old French pivot has been one of the great discoveries of the season in Europe's elite and his sparkling form at Nice has already catapulted him into Didier Deschamps' national team squad.
It is true that the player missed the Qatar World Cup with Les Bleus as Aurélien Tchouameni, a man he closely resembles in footballing terms, was Deschamps' big bet to protect the midfield, but it may not be long before Thuram takes a giant step forward in his playing career under Klopp, with the German certain that the deal will not go through unless Liverpool's board put an offer of around 30 million on the table, a figure similar to his current market value.
