Liverpool continue their free-fall in the Premier League. A second successive defeat against a relegation-placed side ended a run of 29 consecutive home games without defeat in domestic competition. On Saturday they went down 2-1 to Leeds United in Round 14 of the Premier League.
Meslier, who was immeasurable in goal, along with Rodrigo and Summerville made it a bitter night for Klopp's side, who were outclassed at home by an out-of-sorts side. The Reds are now ninth, eight points adrift of the Champions League places and five points clear of the relegation places, which Leeds are now out of after today's win.
Liverpool's defeat to Leeds, a major setback for Klopp
Jude Bellingham breaks silence on his future, Klopp laughs
A fateful start to the game for both teams. A mistake between a defender and Meslier almost gave Leeds a scare in the first move of the game but Struijk saved Salah's shot from under the post. But it was worse for the Reds, who in the fourth minute a mistake in the delivery of Gomez to Alisson, with a pass with too much power, led to the first goal for Leeds by Rodrigo, who did not spare an empty goal.
This allowed the game to go into the 89th minute with the match in the balance and Crysencio Summerville took advantage of a loose ball in the box to beat Alisson with a shot into the bottom right-hand corner and send the Reds into shock. Klopp's side tried their luck in stoppage time with some long-range shots and crosses into the box, but Leeds, well positioned defensively, did not let themselves be dwarfed and picked up three vital points, leaving Liverpool in no man's land in the league standings.
Reds legend Jamie Carragher was highly critical of the team and specifically manager Jürgen Klopp, saying Liverpool have got massive problems: 'This isn't a blip for Liverpool, this is a serious problem. What has gone wrong with this team? They are a shadow of themselves'.
