Klopp still doesn't see Gakpo fit to start for Reds

Liverpool lost 3-1 away to Brentford on Monday as Darwin Nunez was again erratic in front of goal and Cody Gakpo was missed. The Dutch player arrived at Liverpool a few days ago as a great reinforcement after his great participation in the World Cup in Qatar. But even though the 23-year-old seems to be in top physical and footballing form, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has made a clear decision on when and under what conditions his new signing will make his debut.

With Liverpool having restarted the season in decent form with a couple of Premier League wins, the Liverpool camp is now awaiting the Dutchman and what he will be able to do alongside Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Darwin Nunez, with the club's fans having to wait a couple more days as the decision has been made that Cody will have a process of adapting to his surroundings before he can be in action.

Although the 23-year-old has proven to be in an excellent competitive rhythm, Klopp's entourage wants to take things more calmly and not rush the debut of what they intend to be that lifeline player in complicated moments, trusting the German tactician fully in the goal-scoring potential that Darwin Nunez has to be able to solve his first game of 2023 which is against Brentford.

Given the immediacy of Liverpool's fixtures, Gakpo's debut in the starting line-up could well come on 21 January when the Reds host Chelsea at Anfield, giving the Dutchman an incredible opportunity to win over a very demanding fan base from the first 90 minutes, which to date has been very hard on Darwin Nunez, who is also in his first season on Merseyside.

The Reds boss does not want to make the same mistake he made a few months ago when he put the onus of attacking responsibility on Nunez during his early days as a Liverpool player, understanding perfectly that both the Uruguayan and now the Dutchman need some time to adjust to their new working environment and deliver results that justify his recruitment.
