Liverpool made their comeback to action in the Dubai Super Cup, losing 3-1 to Lyon despite playing with lots of effort and displaying encouraging signs for the remainder of the season, within one minute of the game's start, Fábio Carvalho scored the opening goal as Liverpool's counter-press got going. Only a defensive blunder by Caoimhin Kelleher and
Andy Robertson later in the half allowed Lyon, through Alexandre Lacazette, to tie the score, In general play, Mohamed Salah looked smart on and off the ball, and the Reds' press as a whole was high-energy and well-constructed, especially in the early going. However, Salah missed a penalty, After Bradley Barcola gave Lyon the lead after 65 minutes and
Alexandre Lacazette added a third goal with seven minutes remaining, the second half's energy considerably decreased. Jürgen Klopp made several substitutions and introduced some inexperienced players, notably Ben Doak and Bobby Clark, with Luis Dáz and Diogo Jota both expected to miss some time, it was encouraging to see Carvalho look sharp and score just 45 seconds.
The Liverpool players put together a number of beautiful moves, and he connected effectively with both Salah and Roberto Firmino. He also displayed some real talent in the final third, Since there aren't many choices for left wingers right now and Darwin Nez isn't back with his club teammates yet, Carvalho might be in for a big few weeks.
It was intriguing that James Milner initially played right-back rather than holding midfield because Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold were both still in Qatar for the World Cup or at least they were until very recently, with both Brazil and England having been eliminated, Stefan Bajéti was named to the starting XI in place of Calvin Ramsay. It's unclear exactly how much meaning should be derived from the team that was announced, but Bajeti did nothing to hurt his prospects of receiving more playing time in the second half of the season.
