Almost like a training session. England made an early statement when they beat Malta 4-0 away on Friday in the third round of Euro 2024 qualifiers. In Group C, England are on a perfect run of nine points, having already beaten Italy (2-1) and Ukraine (2-0) in the opening rounds in March.
Malta, on the other hand, have lost all three of their matches in the group, having lost to North Macedonia and Italy in March. The match at the Ta'Qali stadium in Attard, in the centre of the main island of the Maltese archipelago, had little to play for and England took an early lead. In the eighth minute, Bukayo Saka's cross was turned into his own net by Ferdinando Apap as he tried to clear and in the 28th minute Trent Alexander-Arnold put England ahead with a shot from the edge of the box.
Next up in the group, England host North Macedonia in Manchester on Monday, while Malta will be looking for their first point in the play-offs when they visit Ukraine, who will play that game at home to Slovakia due to the Russian invasion of their country. In that game Trent is expected to return to the starting line-up in midfield and is already becoming a mainstay of the England team.
In the last weeks it was speculated that Trent would be looking for a new destination when he was not living his best moment still playing as right back and he was linked with Real Madrid and even Barcelona who according to reports from Spain were interested in putting up to 80 million to take him, an interest that could be reactivated after his great performance against Malta.
