Away from Liverpool, Milner continues to humiliate Manchester United

Brighton had fun at the expense of Manchester United, who were embarrassed at Old Trafford in front of their home fans and plunged into a deep patch at the start of the season by opponents who play from memory, with their own style and who welcomed Spain's Ansu Fati, who made his Premier League debut. The former Barcelona player started the game on the bench but came on after the hour mark as the first substitutions took place at the Manchester ground. Ansu came on in place of Danny Welbeck, the player who had set up the game in the first half. The Spanish striker was looking for the lead with the match already decided.

The match was a nightmare for the Red Devils, who combined the setback against Brighton, who long ago ceased to be a surprise and a novelty in the competition to establish themselves as a reality, to those suffered earlier against Tottenham and Arsenal. They are now part of the bottom half of the table while Roberto de Zerbi's side are settling into the top half. Erik Ten Hag's side's strong start to the game, which led to some fine saves from Jason Steele in response to Marcus Rashford, was a mirage. Brighton opened the scoring after 20 minutes. In a move started by Welbeck to Simon Adingra. The ball was going to Adam Lalana who let the ball through and threw the backline off track. It was Welbeck who scored. United had no chance to react and went down. And in the second half, the United side scored.

The game opened up and went from side to side of the pitch. De Zerbi's side came out stronger, handling transitions quickly. Joao Pedro, who came on at the same time as Ansu Fati, took advantage of a great pass from Lamptey to once again beat Andre Onana, who had every shot saved. The consolation goal United scored next. But it was a desperate shot. Pointless, wide, from Hannibal Mejbri, who received from Lisandro Martinez. A shot from outside the box that beat Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele for the only time. Ansu Fati, who had a chance in stoppage time, could have rounded off his debut with a goal. But his shot, intended, went wide. 

James Milner's humiliation

Former Liverpool player James Milner came on as a substitute for the Seagulls in the 77th minute and was able to contribute to his side's humiliation of Manchester United. In doing so, he set a new record as the first player to beat Man United at Old Trafford with four different clubs. 2009/10: 0-1 Aston Villa. 2011/12: 1-6 Man City. 2021/22: 2-4 Liverpool. 2023/24: 1-3 Brighton. Milner has 624 Premier League appearances to his name.
