After a disappointing defeat to Nottingham Forest on weekend, Liverpool fans had something to cheer about over the weekend as rivals all dropped points. Chelsea could only manage a draw against Manchester United, while Arsenal tied with Southampton and Tottenham lost – the latter suffering a shock defeat at home to New Castle United.

This means that Liverpool is now just five points behind Chelsea in the table, and four behind United, with a game in hand over those rivals. With eleven games gone, there is still a long way to go in the season, but Liverpool will be hoping that they can capitalise on their rivals' slip-ups and make a push for the Champions League places. Meaning that Liverpool is still within touching distance of the top of the table.

Despite the defeat, there will be plenty of opportunity for Liverpool to close the gap at the top over the coming weeks, with games against Leeds, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur all on the horizon. They currently sit eighth in the table, but with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all dropping points this weekend, they still have a chance to fight for a European spot. Liverpool will need to take advantage of any slip-ups from their rivals if they are to stand a chance of qualifying for Europe next season.

What next for Liverpool?

After their defeat to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup, Liverpool will be looking to get back to winning ways against Napoli in the Champions League. However, their opponents haven't dropped points in recent matches, so it will be a tough game. On the Premier League side, Tottenham is also struggling at the moment, so Liverpool will be hoping to take advantage of that and move up the table. However, they will need to improve their performances if they want to challenge for the title this season.
