Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez could be sold to Liverpool and arrive at Anfield early next week. He has already scored three goals in seven games for Benfica (from where Darwin Nunez arrived), and has helped them qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Benfica coach Roger Schmidt admitted they could lose Fernandez after he was linked with a move to the Merseyside outfit. Fernandez has been quick to win admirers in European football.
Sky Sports journalist Melissa Reddy claimed that Liverpool have kept a "watchful eye" on the Argentine, despite moving clubs this summer. Schmidt insisted he is not worried about losing the midfielder after recent days of speculation.
"No, I'm not afraid. He feels good here, it's the perfect place for him to develop. He is a great player, a great person, he is focused, professional and knows what he is doing when he comes here. Everything has come together at the right time, I think he will be here for a long time, half a year is not enough," he said.
Liverpool are regular buyers in Portugal, with Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez swapping Porto and Benfica respectively for Anfield. Moreover, Julian Ward, the Reds' new sporting director, is also well acquainted with Portugal from his early days on Merseyside, where he was a European scout focusing on Spain and Portugal.
