Darwin starred for Liverpool in their first title of the season, the Community Shield against Manchester City. He came on with half an hour to go when the game was level and set up the penalty to make it 2-1 and in stoppage time scored to make it 3-1. The Reds won their 16th cup in this competition.

Nunez is a new signing for Liverpool and will eventually become the club's most expensive player, once the add-ons are paid to Benfica. Jurgen Klopp has defended himself from paying as much as the club have done for the former Benfica striker, having previously said he would never spend that much.

Friendlies

The Uruguayan's first appearance in a Liverpool shirt came earlier this week when the Champions League runners-up took on Manchester United in a pre-season friendly, in which the side ran out surprise 4-0 winners. The Uruguayan then went unnoticed against Crystal Palace, but scored 4 goals in the friendly against RB Leipzig, in a game that ended 5 goals to 0 for the Anfield side.

Darwin Núñez entered the game on his return from the dressing room and had the chance to open his Liverpool scoring account just three minutes after coming on. In the 48th minute he took responsibility when the German substitute goalkeeper brought down Luis Diaz in the box.

Nunez made no mistake and completed a great performance with three more goals. In the 51st minute he capitalised on Alexander-Arnold's through ball, in the 68th minute he scored from Harvey Elliott's cross. In the last breath he sealed Liverpool's win with his fourth goal of the afternoon. Fábio Carvalho, another acquisition.
