Joy finally touched the Etihad as United's backyard rivals celebrated their first Champions League title with mediocre but effective football. It took just one goal for the Citizens to win their first European title. Rodri's goal silenced a section of the Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
And while Manchester are celebrating, Liverpool are keeping their heads down, knowing that this Champions League is nothing compared to the Red's greatness. The UEFA figures are clear: the Reds top the list of English Champions League winners. Liverpool's six times (1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005 and 2019).
With this weekend's triumph, Manchester City join the select list of English Champions League winners; Manchester United in three editions (1968, 1999 and 2008), Chelsea twice (2012 and 2021), Nottingham Forest (1979 and 1980) and Aston Villa (1982). It has been four years since Liverpool last lifted the Champions League in Madrid.
While Klopp has not lifted another Champions League, the club, along with the German, came close in 2021 to winning it again, but the wiles of Real VARdrid meant that a golden generation did not farewell in style. After the failure in Paris, Sadio Mané left the club and the following year Roberto Firmino, together with Salah, were the most fearsome trident on the Big Island.
