Liverpool failed to rise to the occasion this season. The Anfield outfit failed to get a foothold in the various competitions, were knocked out in the last 16 of the Champions League and, although they bounced back in the final stages of the Premier League, Manchester United's victory over Chelsea on Thursday condemned Jurgen Klopp's side to Europa League football next season.

Disappointed to hear the news, Mohamed Salah shared a message to fans on his social media for failing to achieve one of the team's minimum targets over the course of this campaign. "I am totally devastated. There is absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to reach next year's Champions League and we failed. We are Liverpool and qualifying for the competition is the minimum. I'm sorry, but it's too early for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down," he wrote on both his Twitter account and Instagram with a black and white image.

With a game to play, Liverpool are fifth on 66 points, four points behind Newcastle, who have clinched the final place in Europe's top club competition, which also features Manchester City (home champions and UCL finalists), Arsenal and Manchester United. Meanwhile, the Reds will have to settle for the second competition, a tournament they had not contested since the 2015-16 season, when they reached the final and lost 3-1 to Sevilla, in Klopp's first season in charge of the team.

Leaving Liverpool

While Liverpool's top player made an important announcement, there is one player in the current squad who is ready to leave the team at the end of the season and that is Harvey Elliot who, given the few opportunities he has had throughout the season, would not rule out taking advantage of the offer he received from Newcastle, who will play in the Champions League after many years of absence.
