In recent years Liverpool have not spent much money to strengthen the squad, at least not as much as they are expected to this year as they look to bolster their midfield after a disappointing season in which they missed out on places in the next Champions League. However, a year ago the Reds shelled out €80 million for Uruguayan attacker Dárwin Núñez, who was then playing for Benfica.

Núñez arrived at Anfield as one of the great promises of world football, as at his young age he dominated rival defenses in the Portuguese league and aroused the interest of big teams around the world, but he decided to come to the Reds to be managed by Jürgen Klopp.

The start of the season was not the best of all for Dárwin Núñez, as his adaptation to the physical game of the Premier League took longer than expected, however the 23-year-old Uruguayan striker always had the support of the German coach, who always declared the great talent of Núñez and showed his confidence in him.

Núñez ended up playing in 29 Premier League games this season, scoring only 9 goals, which was less than most fans expected. In addition, Dárwin Núñez suffered injuries that did not allow him to reach his best level and even left him out of the last few games of the English league campaign.

Uruguay's decision regarding Dárwin Núñez

The 23-year-old striker suffered a toe injury that forced him to miss the last three Premier League matches. In view of this, the new coach of the Uruguay national team, Marcelo Bielsa, decided to leave Núñez out of the squad for the upcoming friendly matches against Cuba and Nicaragua.
