Darwin Núñez has no peace in England and must once again face criticism from the English media. The Daily Mail has published a harsh article against him, questioning whether the Uruguayan is the answer for Jürgen Klopp in the centre-forward position in the Liverpool team. They also compared him to Erling Haaland, who has just broken the Premier League record for goals in a single season.
Núñez's first season at Anfield has been a difficult one. He arrived as the striker to replace Roberto Firmino, but he has not been the solution. Many club fans and media specialists expected more from the former Benfica and Almeria. His season of 15 goals in 41 games sounds like a poor return for the 80 million euros they paid for him.
Moreover, the comparisons do not help him. The aforementioned English newspaper questioned him for his lack of goals in recent games compared to Haaland, top scorer of Manchester City and the Premier League. "On the night Erling Haaland broke more records, Darwin Nunez's Liverpool run stretched to just one goal in his last 10 games," begins the article, which summarises his difficult campaign. He only scored against Leeds (6-1) in the last 10 games he played in.
With 15 goals he surpassed several top Premier League players such as Raheem Sterling who only scored 9 goals all year. But the future of the Uruguayan now that the season is over is sad as he would be out of the Uruguay squad for the summer games due to the foot injury that left him out of Liverpool's last games of the season.
