Brighton & Hove Albion made official the signing of James Milner on a free transfer after the player was released by Premier League giants Liverpool. The former England international agreed a one-year deal at the Amex Stadium, with an option to extend for a further 12 months. Speaking to the club's website, Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi said: "I am delighted to welcome James to Brighton.

"He is an excellent addition for us and I am sure he will help take us to an even higher level," added the tactician, who guided his side to a sixth-place finish in the recent English Premier League, which earned them qualification for the UEFA Europa League. The 37-year-old Leeds native made 61 international appearances for his country between 2009 and 2016 and began his career with his hometown's top club. He also played for Newcastle, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

Among his achievements with the Reds he won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup during eight years at Anfield. Milner will join Brighton following the expiry of his contract with the Merseyside outfit on 30 June and will add experience to the squad. Seagulls manager David Weir said: "His experience speaks for itself with the number of games he has played and the trophies he has won over a decorated career. These games include European competition, which will be of great value to us as we embark on our first season in Europe."

Leaving Liverpool

Milner is currently third on the all-time Premier League appearances list with 619, behind Gareth Barry (652) and Ryan Giggs (632). The veteran midfielder, who can also play at full-back, is Brighton's second signing of the summer (Northern Hemisphere) following the arrival of Brazilian striker Joao Pedro from Watford. "It's an exciting team, with a great manager, and it's a great time to join for the first season in Europe to come. I can't wait to pull on the shirt," Milner confessed.
