Footballers tend to be a very attractive profile for reality TV. The example we have already seen in Spain with cases such as Miguel Guerrero in La isla de las tentaciones or in other countries with Paul Gascoigne in Scared of the Dark, has been repeated once again with a Liverpool and Manchester United youth player. Welshman of Dutch descent Scott van-der-Sluis was one of the goalkeepers at Shelbourne FC in the Irish League until he was offered the chance to join Love Island, one of the UK's most popular dating shows. The 22-year-old goalkeeper did not hesitate to accept ITV's offer, even if it meant saying goodbye to football.

"I was surprised and saddened that Scott preferred a villa in Majorca full of beautiful, single women to me, the staff and the other players," joked his coach and former Ireland international Damiel Duff, as reported by RTE. "I thank Scott for his service to Shelbourne and we all wish him all the best for the future, whatever that may be," he added.

In his introduction as a Love Island contestant, van-der-Sluis extolled his skills as a goalkeeper and advocated that these could help him in his conquests of the Mallorca villa. "I'm tall, dark, handsome and I'm a goalkeeper, so I'm good with my hands," he declared before admitting that he had had no problem leaving his previous profession. "Football is all I've ever done, all I've ever known. So this is a new and exciting opportunity for a change in life," he concluded as he introduced himself.

The decision

At the age of 22 Scott had not found consistency in any team. Despite being capped for Wales at youth level, his career has consisted of moving from team to team without quality playing time. In fact, this past season, he only played two games in the Leinister Senior Cup in which he did not concede a goal.
