Ahead of the European Championship qualifiers, where The Tree Lions will be in action this weekend, there was a piece of news that went around the world, being the support that Jürgen Klopp gave to one of the players who was little accepted and recognised by the fans, being even a luxury substitute.

The case of Adrian San Miguel is unprecedented because since his arrival in 2019 as a free agent from West Ham United, the Spanish goalkeeper has played little under Klopp, who relegated him to domestic competitions such as the League Cup and FA Cup. Now 36, San Miguel has played for five clubs, making his debut for Real Betis in 2008.

Adrian had a brief spell with the Spain national team from 2015 to 2016, where Vicente del Bosque decided to put his faith in him after his good performances with the Hammers, where he was consistent and saved the category with the Londoners. This caught the eye of Klopp who chose him after the departure of Simon Mignolet to Bruges in Belgium.

Unheard of, Klopp has the luxury of having a top substitute and not playing him

San Miguel arrived on Merseyside and from the first moment he made his presence felt. "I am very ambitious. I will push Ali from the first minute to try to improve us," he said at his unveiling a couple of years ago. With his exit rumoured, Klopp decided to keep Adrian as Alisson's back-up in the event of a drop in play or injury.
