Liverpool's aim was to reach the top of the table and stay in the European places, now far behind in the standings. But they came up against a clinical Arsenal start that saw them take a two-goal lead on the half-hour mark. Amid a high tempo, the visitors were rewarded after just eight minutes when Martin Odegaard drove in a Martin Odegaard drive and Gabriel Martinelli beat Alisson to make it 1-0.
It was Arsenal's best spell of the game and they extended their lead in the 28th minute in a classic, textbook move. A cross from the left, on the run, from Martinelli into the box was headed into the net by Gabriel Jesus (2-0). Liverpool got the better of Mohammed Salah's legs. The Egyptian could have pulled one back in the 33′ but missed. It was three minutes before half-time when they got closer on the scoreboard. Diogo Jota received the ball on the left flank and sent it into the middle where it was played on by Jordan Henderson to Salah who made no mistake and slotted past Aaron Ramsdale (2-1).
The break did nothing to dampen Liverpool's spirits and they stepped up a gear after the break. A foul by Rob Holding on Diogo Jota led to a penalty. Salah took it. He shot wide, low, near the post. He wasted a great chance to revive the match. Andy Robertson and Salah had the equaliser in the 57th but were denied. It was late on, with Trent Alexander Arnold's great work leaving Oleksandr Zinchenko exposed to cross into the heart of the box where Firmino stepped in to send an impossible ball, into the net, beyond the reach of Ramsdale who then multiplied to prevent his side's damage from being any greater (2-2).
The Brazilian is living his last season with Liverpool. He is one of the best players in Reds history and formed a great strike partnership with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané. Roberto Firmino has scored 11 goals in 15 league appearances against Arsenal - no Liverpool's player has scored more against the Gunners in league history.
