Arsenal legend Ian Wrigth praised Jurgen Klopp's side on stage at the OTB Cadbury FC Roadshow for making the Premier League interesting in recent seasons.
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have won the title in four of the last five seasons, while Liverpool were crowned champions of England for the first time since 1990 at the end of the 2019-20 campaign. Liverpool finished one point behind City in both the 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons and the Reds are City's most direct title challengers this term.
Back-to-back draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace are an inauspicious start to the new season for Liverpool, but victory over rivals Manchester United on Monday night would lift them back into the top half of the Premier League table.
Wright suggested the Premier League would currently be a dreadful spectacle if it were not for Liverpool. "I think Fulham were unbelievable in the first [weekend], they put Liverpool under pressure and the reason they did that is because you know Liverpool, they've chased a Man City team that is imperious."
If it wasn't for Liverpool, this fucking league would be shit," said the retired striker-turned-commentator. "Simply because, City beat them twice by one point, then hammered them out of sight. If it wasn't for Liverpool it would be a procession," he added.
