Darwin's origins are well known to Uruguayans, but a month ago, through Kodansha, a Japanese comic book publisher, Liverpool told the story of the sky-blue striker from his beginnings to his present at the Reds. "It was very difficult because when I left Artigas I was 14 years old. It is a very small city and the truth is that it is very difficult when you are separated from your family, but as time goes by you realise that it is worth it," confessed the striker.

"I grew up as an Indian, in the countryside, running among the bugs, in the water where you couldn't see the ground and among the branches, someone always ended up getting hurt. That's how we grew up and that's what characterises me on the field today," he added. Now that the season is over, despite being left out of the next Champions League, Darwin's numbers are good and the striker is noticeable.

The Uruguayan striker also opened up about the day he wanted to quit football: "When I had a knee injury (he broke cruciate ligaments and then had surgery on the kneecap of the same knee) and I was a year and a half without playing, my world fell apart and I wanted to quit, but my parents and my brother were the support for me and told me that I could not give up and today I have to learn from the most experienced in Liverpool who won many things and I hope to win many more titles and that they remain in history".

I'm leaving

On his trip to Uruguay he also played a friendly match with a team from his neighbourhood and there he gave a statement that surprised everyone: "I'm leaving with tremendous happiness, with my batteries well recharged. I'm sorry I couldn't take photos with everyone. I would like to be able to take photos with everyone but it's a bit difficult, but I thank everyone who supports me from the bottom of my heart".
