Newcastle intend to extend his contract until the end of the season. Loris Karius will renew with Newcastle United. As confirmed by ESPN, his performances have been so highly rated by Magpies boss Eddie Howe that he has told the board he wants the 29-year-old goalkeeper to extend his contract until the end of the season. A prize that was reciprocated after the St. James's Park outfit decided to 'rescue' the 'keeper of curse', who has been without a club since the end of his contract at Liverpool, where he spent a final year on the sidelines after failing to find a club.
After that calamitous performance in the 2018 Champions League final in Kiev against Real Madrid, a promising career eventually took a nosedive, with two unsuccessful loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin in between. Now, he seems to be reborn. "My time at Liverpool was over and I was looking to move on [in 2021], but then there were difficulties in finding a team. I found myself in a situation where I had to stay at Liverpool, knowing I wouldn't get my chance. It was openly discussed with Klopp. There is no bad blood, but knowing the situation from the beginning was difficult," the Stuttgart-trained German goalkeeper began by revealing about his alleged bad relationship with the Reds boss.
Giving him the necessary gaming time to advance, exposing him to a higher level
The 23-year-old was given a tremendous opportunity to establish himself
"I've played more than 200 games in the first division and national teams, so I knew my qualities. I knew I had a lot to offer. I'm going to be 30 and that's no age for a goalkeeper, but of course last season was difficult. Being left out of the squad game after game, you end up losing a little bit of the feeling you get when you win, lose and travel with the team. You just miss it. It's not easy to stay positive and keep working because obviously you know you're not going to be involved. I learned a lot from that, I worked hard in training and stayed positive mentally," he explained, after not being called up for any games.
"It made me go to another club. Maybe it was a move that wouldn't have happened otherwise," the German said of his fateful match against Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final, in which he had a large share of responsibility for two goals, from Benzema and Bale. "For me it's exhausting to keep talking about it, it's football and things happen. In my case there were, a lot of unfortunate things, but I don't think about that anymore. Four years in football feels like eight or twelve," he admitted.
I was out of the limelight, in Turkey and Germany, but people know me in England. I'm ready, I needed to train and I needed time to adapt because I was training alone for three months," he said of his time at Newcastle, who signed him on 12 September. "I'm really pleased with the training and now I know I can do it in a game in the future. It's been a great few months. Of course, I'm not playing yet, but how I've been training or how I've been received by the whole group makes me believe I can achieve more here. That's my goal, to be here for a long project instead of a short one". Something that seems to be coming true.
