Darwin Núnez's involvement at Liverpool has been growing slowly after an inconsistent start to life with the Premier League side. The Uruguayan is starting to gel with the team, a fact celebrated by Jürgen Klopp after the win over West Ham. The German coach valued the contribution of the Uruguayan, who already has three goals in his last four games.
He's important. He's scored a couple of times now in the last few games. He's at 100 per cent, now even with numbers, which is good,' Klopp commented after the game. He felt the muscles a little bit at half-time, but everything was fine and after five minutes of the second half I was a little bit worried about the long sprints for him and the balls where he stretches his legs. I thought, 'Come on, we can't take that risk' and that's why we changed," he added.
Alisson saved Liverpool, but blamed this player for being ineffective
Henderson is called old and this is how Klopp reacted at press conference
Meanwhile, he referred to the close encounters the team has had in recent games: 'It's a Premier League game and I can't remember an easy game in the seven years and a few days, and it sure wasn't easy tonight. We played well enough, and at times, really well.' Liverpool are seventh in the Premier League on 16 points and next face Nottingham Forest away.
Liverpool are closing in on the Europe they were on the fringes of after their poor start. It was Nunez who was the main nuisance for West Ham, cornered early on. The Uruguayan opened the scoring when he headed home a left-wing cross from Greece's Kostas Tsimikas. He could have done another later, with a shot saved by Lukasz Fabianski. Things stopped happening at Anfield even though the control was in the net. However, an absurd foul by Joe Gomez on Jarrod Bowen in the 44th minute was flagged by the VAR. The referee awarded a penalty. Bowen took it and Alisson saved it. It was the visitors' best chance.
On the hour mark Klopp made three changes in one go. He brought on Harvey Elliott, Fabinho and Curtis Jones and withdrew Darwin Nunez, Thiago and Fabio Carvalho. Firmino could have scored. He shot in a great position but the ball bounced off a defender and went wide. Mohamed Salah also had a couple of chances, but without success. West Ham had the chance to equalise late on. Tomas Soucek found himself two metres from Alisson. His shot, from close range, was deflected by the goalkeeper. It was the last chance.
