The first half of the season has not gone according to plan for Liverpool, who are sixth in the Premier League, 15 points behind leaders Arsenal. However, Steven Gerrard is confident Liverpool will bounce back in the second half after the World Cup break in Qatar. Speaking to the club's website, the former midfielder said:
"Yes, it's a chance for Liverpool to have a second pre-season and a chance to do a lot of work on the training ground, to readjust a few things." He continued: "I'm sure Jürgen Klopp and his team are doing a lot of things from a tactical point of view, but it's also a chance to rest. They've played a lot over the last few years, they played in every competition last season.
This is what Van Dijk will do at Liverpool now that Konaté is the best defender in the world

As such, the Briton expressed his desire to see an improvement in performance: "So, by having a little pre-season before the season restarts, having this opportunity to rest and then having a second preparation, hopefully Liverpool will be at their best. Furthermore, the former Aston Villa manager commented:
"I expect a really strong six months and end to the season, because the important players have had a chance to rest and recover, and the World Cup players should come back full of confidence, in a good momentum and physically ready." It is worth noting the Anfield side's drop in form compared to the previous campaign, when they finished as Manchester City's runners-up in the title race and only lost two games, while they now have four defeats to their name.
Nor was it characterised by a good performance in the Champions League (after last season's runners-up finish after defeat to Real Madrid), as it finished behind Napoli in Group A of the competition, with 15 points. In February, they will face Merengue in the round of 16. Klopp's side will be back in action next Thursday in the League Cup clash with the Citizens, while on 26 December they will visit Aston Villa in the 17th round of the Premier League.
