Jürgen Klopp described this season as patchy but believes the squad has what it takes to achieve great things next season as Liverpool face Southampton in the final Premier League game. It remains for them to secure fifth place to play Europa League football.
Liverpool's season has been one of the worst since Jürgen Klopp arrived at the club in 2015, it's even worse than 2021 when they finished barely qualifying for the Champions League after coming from several places behind. Yet this time it didn't happen and they will miss out on the chance to play in Europe's top club competition.
They are fifth in the table with 66 points and 19 wins from 37 games, four points behind fourth-placed Newscastle, so it is only against Southampton that they will finish their campaign and play in the Europa League, a tournament they have not been in since the 2016-17 campaign when they finished eighth in 2016. So not so pleasant memories will be coming for their fans. In a press conference, Klopp described their campaign as inconsistent and that they will only pick up the pace in the last few games, where he had his side hopeful of reaching the fourth place that never came.
"It has not been a historic season. We are not happy at all, we made mistakes, we were not consistent. After our stage in Dubai after the World Cup, not everything was great, but the number of points at the end was pretty good. If it had been like that all season, we would be in a different position".
