When Liverpool paid €80 million for Darwin Nuñez, all Liverpool fans expected the Uruguayan striker to be the Reds' new big striker, but his debut season at Anfield was not the best of all and certainly not what many expected of him.

Nunez had had some great moments at Benfica in the Portuguese league, but his adaptation to the Premier League took longer than expected. The 23-year-old Uruguayan striker played a total of 29 games in the English league and scored only 9 goals, which was a far cry from what he promised considering what was paid for him.

His performances have caused a sector of the fans to call for Nuñez to leave, and although that seems unlikely, the truth is that Darwin will have a great responsibility next season in which he should score many more goals and be much more important to the team than he did in the 2022-2023 campaign.

Jürgen Klopp has already decided the Uruguayan's immediate future in the team, and although everything indicates that both Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo are one step ahead of Nuñez in the German tactician's mind, it seems that the young attacker will still have a chance at Liverpool and could even occupy a new dorsal.

Nunez, Firmino's heir to the '9' role

After Roberto Firmino's departure from the team, the number 9 jersey was left without an owner. Darwin Nuñez, who will have to surpass what he himself did last season, is the one who is aiming to take it. Even the fans seem to give Nuñez the vote of confidence to wear the number 9 next season.
