It is impossible to deny that Darwin Nunez's debut season was not what we all expected, as the Uruguayan striker arrived with huge expectations at Anfield after the Liverpool board paid €80 million for him from Benfica, where he scored more than 30 goals in his last season. However, his adaptation to English football was more difficult than expected, and Nunez ended up scoring only 9 goals in the Premier League last season.

Even when his signing was made official, he was compared to his compatriot Luis Suarez, who is an Anfield legend, however at least in his first season Nunez fell far short of those comparisons, although now the perception is different, as it has been reported that Darwin has scored the same amount of goals (17) as Luis Suarez when both reached the 45-game mark.

Many, during the summer, strongly criticized Nunez and it had been reported that even the language would have been an obstacle for him, but it seems that during the vacations the Uruguayan got to work and the improvements in his game are evident, not only because of the double he scored against Newcastle in the last game of our Liverpool, but also during the preseason he also showed that he had a higher level than last year.

However, it seems that this season Darwin Nunez could become an extremely important player for our Liverpool and according to the Uruguayan striker himself this is due, in large part, to a great coach who knows English football perfectly and who has helped him to improve certain aspects of his game. We are talking about Marcelo Bielsa, former coach of Leeds United and current coach of the Uruguayan national team, where Darwin Nunez will be one of his strikers.

What did Bielsa say to Nunez?

Darwin Nunez told Sport 890, a Uruguayan radio station, that he had a talk with Marcelo Bielsa through Zoom, in which the coach told him about certain aspects that he can improve. "He showed me some of my games and corrected some things. It was a very good talk. A lot of people told me he is a serious guy. It is a new national team set up, I hope it goes well for us," he said.
