Manchester United confirmed the signing of England midfielder Mason Mount for £55m (64m euros) plus a further five million in variables. Mount, who has already said goodbye to Chelsea in a statement, failed to reach a renewal deal with the Blues and decided to leave the club this season rather than wait for his contract to run out and leave on a free next season.

The Englishman, a UEFA Champions League winner with Chelsea, joined the club at the age of six and came through the youth ranks before going out on loan to Derby County, where he played alongside Frank Lampard, who later gave him his first-team debut and confidence in the Chelsea first team.

"I wanted to say how grateful I am to have received all your support over the last 18 years. I know some of you will not be happy with my decision, but I feel this is the right thing to do at this point in my career," Mount said in a video. The Old Trafford outfit have thus secured the services of Mason Mount, scorer of three goals and as many assists in 35 appearances for the Blues last season. He is a highly influential and incisive player, capable of making a difference in the final yards of every game.

Master Class

However, this move by Manchester United demonstrates the master class move made by our manager Jürgen Klopp as he signed the Hungarian Dominik Szoboszlai for 70 million and a lower salary despite the fact that he is one of the most promising players in Europe in the same position as Mount. The Hungarian will earn around 120k a week while Mount will receive up to 250m a week, according to various journalists.
