Nasser Al-Khelaïfi and Paris Saint-Germain have been winning every battle to keep Kylian Mbappé, but although they have so far beaten their great rivals Liverpool, the war continues and their latest trap to keep the Bondy 7 in Paris has backfired. What's more, the soap opera is now touching Luis Enrique's start-up and is intensifying to such an extent that the future of the crack player is once again stirring up a hornet's nest.
At 24 years of age and a world-class star, Mbappé lacks the confirmation (not so in his national team), that which only comes with competitiveness in the Champions League and theoretical supremacy (in terms of economic and sporting potential) in Ligue 1, and far from getting closer to both objectives, PSG took another step backwards this past weekend in their defeat against Nice (2-3), where the 10 of Les Bleus scored both goals for the Parisians. The strategy of Al-Khelaïfi and Qatar with Mbappé is clear, to stretch the timescale and at the same time gain space to convince the player again with another super-contract; all this by giving him the keys to the project. But there is something wrong, the player doubts the latter, and Nice is just another chapter in a long series of misfortunes. Luis Enrique's PSG, like Galtier's or Pochettino's, are not convincing; they are not convincing in Ligue 1 and certainly not in the Champions League, and if this one does not succeed, the idea of not renewing Mbappé - which is already stony - will become as solid as a rock.
Put another way, there is nothing that could suit Real Madrid better with the Mbappé affair - and therefore worse for PSG's interests - than the failures of Luis Enrique's side. Because Mbappé does not want to be the leader of a team that does not aspire to dominate. Yes, he already is and without Neymar and Messi fighting him for the leadership, but the team does not respond and the big difference this time is that Mbappé is the only person who can decide his future after June 2024, where, without results, not even the money will make him stay at the club in the city where he was born.
Liverpool, known for their rich football history and passionate fans, have once again shown their ambition in the transfer market. According to recent sources, the Reds have not given up on the idea of signing the PSG star and plan to make an offensive in the summer of 2024 if Mbappé does not renew his contract with the Parisian club, despite Real Madrid's desire for him. Rumours suggest Liverpool are considering a different strategy. Instead of an outright transfer, the Reds could be looking to land Mbappé on loan, paying PSG for a loan move before the player becomes a free agent.
