A game of Marcus Thuram in a Borussia Mönchengladbach shirt may now be a thing of the past. It has been known since mid-April that the French striker will leave the German club when his contract expires on 30 June, and on Sunday he suffered an injury that all but rules him out of the last five Bundesliga games remaining.
Gladbach announced that Thuram had to withdraw late in Sunday's game against Union Berlin due to an adductor fibre tear and, although it does not specify the length of time off, such an injury normally requires six to eight weeks off, with the Bundesliga season concluding in a month's time on 27 May.
The injury will prevent him from challenging for the Bundesliga top scorer's title, leaving him with 13 goals in 28 games, behind only Niclas Füllkrug, who has scored three more for Werder Bremen. This is undoubtedly Marcus Thuram's best season. He has never scored so many goals (he has 16, including three in the DFB Pokal) and in the Bundesliga he has 34 in 109 games since his arrival in 2019. Gladbach are tenth in the table and have virtually no chance of qualifying for European competitions. Among the rumours in Germany, Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing him for free.
While Liverpool want to sign the French striker, Uruguayan Darwin Nunez is in Uruguay on holiday after his first season at Anfield, where he arrived in exchange for 80 million from Benfica. In Uruguay Nunez had a new team, his neighbourhood team, with whom he played a charity match to collect food and help the homeless.
