Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson warned the team of a "knee-jerk" reaction to solve their midfield problems in the final days of the transfer window. He also described the current midfield option available to Jurgen Klopp as "a bit lightweight" compared to their Premier League rivals.

After losing Thiago Alcantara to a hamstring injury in their 2-2 draw against Fulham on Saturday (6 August), the Spain international limped off early in the second half of the game and has been ruled out for at least six weeks.

Thiago's injury set alarm bells ringing in the mind of Klopp, who has already lost Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to injury and illness. Given the number of injuries so early in the new season, Phil Thompson has warned the club's manager that he must exercise caution in dealing with the problems and not make a rash decision.

Thompson said Thiago's injury will have an impact on the quality of the club's midfield and called on Klopp to prepare well for the upcoming games.

He said: "As you have seen, the way our football club is run, we like to plan. We don't want knee-jerk reactions. We had to do that when we lost all our centre-backs, we had to make moves and we ended up going with the two youngsters.''
