Gordon will almost certainly play with the U21s to kick-off his campaign, though. It’s not thought that Jurgen Klopp will call him up to feature in the first-team anytime soon – more academy football is in his future. The winger made the jump to Under 23 level last season and the newly revamped Under 21s are expected to welcome him back imminently.

Kaide Gordon nears a return to fitness

It’s a real shame that Gordon missed pre-season this year as he made such an impression in 2021. The teenager went into last season with incredible hype around him and that turned itself into some first-team appearances. In fact, Gordon even scored in a senior Liverpool shirt. He got a couple of Premier League minutes, too, and it’s obvious that the coaching staff rate him highly. The players do, too.

Trent Alexander-Arnold labelled him ‘frightening’ after training with him for a bit. It’s enormous praise from one of the game’s premier full-backs – Alexander-Arnold knows his wingers. We’re thrilled to hear that Gordon could return to action soon, then. Though, we’ll take the report with a touch of salt as the Athletic did report in July that the teenager was nearing a return. Setbacks happen – especially with young players who aren’t worth risking on a quick return.

But this is yet another big season for Gordon. Once he’s back, eyes will be on him once again as Liverpool noticeably keep their right-wing backup spot open. It’s one the youngster could fill by the end of the season, if all goes well. And long-term, the plan is undoubtedly for Gordon to succeed Mohamed Salah.
