Southgate and Klopp's disagreement over Trent Alexander Arnold ahead of England game

This Friday 16 June Malta play England in Group C of the Euro 2024 qualifiers. A match in which the two teams arrive after both have played two games respectively, although with very different results, because while the English have two wins, the Maltese have only known defeat in both games, occupying the last position in the group.

England go into this match at the top of Group C of the 2024 European Championship qualifiers having won both matches they have played so far (1-2 against Italy away and 2-0 against Ukraine at home), both matches played in March.

They had previously been eliminated from the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the quarter-finals, losing 1-2 to France, who went on to play in the final of the World Cup. In Qatar they managed to win 3 games, draw 1 and lose just one, and conceded just four goals in the five matches, although they were held scoreless in three games. I think there is little doubt that they will qualify from this group, as only Italy look capable of challenging them, but Friday's game will be a match they should win against Malta.

The disagreement

Trent Alexander-Arnold became one of Liverpool's best players at the end of last season thanks to a positional change brought about by German manager Jürgen Klopp. However, manager Gareth south gate is not so convinced about using him in that position on the pitch: "Well, let’s see! You know that I think he is more than capable of playing there and it can be really exciting. “If we were to do that, we would not be expecting perfection. There's a lot to learn, particularly without the ball. It is different areas of the pitch. With the ball, that is a more straightforward transition for him. He has been playing there a little bit more for his club so it is something for us to consider, definitely".
