James Milner and Firmino began their farewell appearances for the Europa League-bound Reds as manager Klopp made seven changes, including the selection of Caoimhin Kelleher in goal. As Southampton sought to restore a modicum of pride after their fate was sealed a fortnight ago, Liverpool initially looked set for a win.
Some shoddy defending gave the visitors the opening goal in the 10th minute when Jota fired into an unguarded net from close range after being caught by a woeful pass from Romeo Lavia as the Saints tried to play out from the back. Firmino quickly doubled the Reds' lead, collecting Fabinho's pass on the edge of the hosts' penalty area before weaving his way between Lyanco and Jan Bednarek and through the legs of Saints goalkeeper McCarthy.
Veteran midfielder Ward-Prowse, who could make his final appearance for Saints before a planned summer move, halved the deficit in the 19th minute and Selles' side equalised nine minutes later. Sulemana, who scored his first goal in English football for Kelleher. And the Reds soon faced an uphill battle to salvage anything as substitute Armstrong made an immediate impact. But late in the game Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota popped up to score the equaliser.
After this game, there will be a number of departures from Liverpool although one that was not foreseen was announced by journalist Fabrizio Romano: Understand there’s a permanent deal bid on Liverpool table from club abroad for Fabio Carvalho. There are also many loan deal bids from PL clubs but Carvalho is not accepting as project will be crucial for his decision. Klopp, aware of his intentions. Talks ongoing.
