Before Christian Ziege, the first of a half-dozen players to score for the visitors that evening, opened the scoring with just six minutes left in the game, the home team had actually hit the post. 22 years later, an 8-0 League Cup thrashing at Stoke City still holds the record for the Reds' largest margin of victory outside of Anfield in all competitions.
With more strikes before the break, Vladimir Smicer, Markus Babbel, and Robbie Fowler effectively ended the fourth-round match. Sami Hyypia and Danny Murphy joined the action with quick-fire strikes either side of the hour mark fowler scored twice more in the closing minutes to complete his hat-trick, the final goal coming from the penalty spot.
It was simple to lose track, and the stadium's scoreboard did too, at one point showing 0-9. It was a remarkable outcome in a season that would go down in history as Gerard Houllier's team won the League Cup, the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup, and qualified for the Champions League. Houllier noted after the game, "Really, we never really lightened off."
We persisted in our efforts, which is perhaps why we scored four goals in each half. Best six-goal winning margins for men away from home have come in the form of 7-1 triumphs, with the first coming in a league victory over Derby County in 1991 that featured doubles like John Barnes and Steve Nicol.
John Barnes and Steve Nicol. The decisive victory over Rangers in the Champions League last month, during which Salah scored a hat-trick in the fastest time in the competition—six minutes and 12 seconds—emulated that, At Ibrox, Klopp remarked, "It's a fluke result, and we all know that. We don't make more of it than we should." However, that is obviously the best we could have hoped for, which is why I am rather happy.
