Uruguay's Darwin Nunez, who scored a brace against Newcastle United at the weekend, improves on compatriot Luis Suarez's tally in his first 45 Liverpool appearances. Darwin, who gave his side the win with two late goals against Newcastle in a game Liverpool had lost after playing with ten men for 60 minutes, has yet to start a game so far this season.
The Uruguayan played 24 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Chelsea on the opening day of the Premier League, played just four in the win against Bournemouth, in another game marked by Alexis Mac Allister's dismissal, and was instrumental off the bench against Newcastle, despite playing just 13 minutes.
In his first season as a Red, Núñez struggled to adapt to English football, with a sending-off in his third game marking the start of his landing at Liverpool. That, coupled with a number of injuries, as well as playing in a team that was far from his usual level and an unfair comparison with Erling Haaland when they both arrived in the same summer, caused doubts about the striker to grow.
Even so, his numbers were not bad. Fifteen goals in all competitions, a tally that he is aiming to surpass in the coming years and which for now puts him above Luis Suárez, a legend at Anfield. El Pistolero scored 16 goals in his first 45 games for the Reds, eventually scoring 82 goals in 133 appearances in the four seasons he spent before leaving for Barcelona. Darwin Núñez has 17 in 45 games. Darwin's first start could come this weekend when Liverpool host Aston Villa at Anfield.
