There was a Europa League matchday on Thursday and title contenders Liverpool were made to suffer more than they bargained for in their away game against LASK Austria. What looked to be a straightforward game for the English giants ended up being a hard-fought victory that took more effort than expected and a curious situation unfolded in the closing stages. As the clock ticked towards the 90-minute mark, Mohamed Salah produced a fantastic individual move down the right, piling up opponents and slotting between the keeper's legs to make it 3-1. But not all his team-mates were celebrating as Harvey Elliot, number 19, claimed the pass into the middle.
As seen on the broadcast, the 20-year-old midfielder was in the middle of the box and at one point was completely free. But instead of passing the ball to him, the African striker kicked at goal, a little awkwardly, but with enough of an outside edge to scream home the third. Elliot evidently didn't like it too much because when the ball crossed the line, he seemed to make a wailing gesture.
Even in the celebrations, despite being just a few metres away from Salah, he was slow to approach to congratulate him and was seen in the background next to Luis Díaz, to whom he seemed to comment on his reproach. Some users on social media noticed what happened and commented on it, although most of them were joking and also took advantage of the Fulham player's great display.
Liverpool won 3-1 thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez (penalty), Luis Diaz and Salah, while defender Florian Flecker scored for LASK. The group is completed by Union SG of Belgium and Toulouse of France, who drew 1-1. The Reds will host the Belgians next. Jürgen Klopp's side, who failed to qualify for the Champions League last season, are looking to bounce back this year and are on a run of five wins on the bounce after a draw against Chelsea on the opening day of the Premier League season.
