Liverpool defeated Burnley 2-0 in the 19th Premier League matchday 2023/24, corresponding to Boxing Day, in Burnley, where the Uruguayan Darwin Núñez opened the scoring. In this way, Jürgen Klopp's side now lead the table with 42 points, two ahead of Arsenal, who play West Ham on Thursday.
After a couple of early early early moments from the home side, Jurgen Klopp's side opened the scoring after just six minutes. Darwin Nunez was involved in the build-up, Cody Gakpo broke down the left and the Uruguayan struck first-time against the post after a good back pass from the Dutchman. Gakpo then scored but the goal was disallowed for an earlier foul by Núñez, and on 34 minutes Salah smashed a left-footed shot against the crossbar. On 55 minutes young Harvey Elliott scored, but Salah was offside and obstructed the keeper's vision. Liverpool's goal, disallowed by the video referee, lifted the home side's spirits and, in the 59th minute, they came close to equalising when Mike Trésor found Dara O'Shea from a corner, whose header was deflected well wide by the Uruguayan striker to prevent a 1-1 draw.
With time running out, Endo recovered a great ball in the middle of the pitch and played the ball to Diogo Jota, who transported the ball several metres to Luis Díaz, who returned the ball with a backheel and, with a powerful shot, the Portuguese himself finished off the game.
After the match, the Liverpool players celebrated with the fans who travelled through the Travelling Kop to Burnley and the one who won their hearts was Darwin Nunez as he danced to Diogo Jota's song after his goal.
