The Uruguayan Darwin Nunez had a dream afternoon at St. James Park as after being on the bench to come on as a substitute he scored both goals as Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-1 and won their second Premier League victory of the season to move into the top half of the table.

The game started badly for the Reds as a mistake by Trent Alexander-Arnold opened the door for Magpies striker Anthony Gordon to score to make it 1-0. Then came the sending off of captain Virgil van Dijk for a dubious foul in which referee John Brooks deemed there was excessive force and gave him the red card so the Dutchman could be suspended for the next three games.

However, in the second half things improved for the team coached by Jurgen Club and especially after the entry of the Uruguayan Darwin Nunez, who replaced the Argentine Alexis Mac Allister, who had a very discreet game. It is worth remembering that Núñez has barely played a few minutes so far this Premier League season as he has lost his place in the starting line-up to the Dutchman Cody Gakpo.

The goals

Nunez's first goal came in the 81st minute when he took advantage of a defensive lapse in the Magpies' defence to get inside the box and beat the keeper with a right-footed shot to level the scores. And in the last play of the match, Darwin took advantage of a great resistance from Mohamed Salah for a goal.
