Liverpool have a new leader, but their top player has been sidelined

A new era has begun at Liverpool as it was officially announced that Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk is the team's new captain, following the departure of Jordan Henderson who left for Al Ettifaq in Arabia, where the Reds' last two captains will be led by Steven Gerrard.

Through social media, the club announced that Van Dijk, 32, is the new leader of the team after completing his sixth season with the institution and after having a tournament with inconsistent performances due to injuries and underperformance. It was also announced that Trent Alexander Arnold is the new vice-captain, replacing star striker Mohamed Salah.

This was a clear indication from the game in Germany against Greuther Fürth in which Salah came on in the second half and without Van Dijk and Trent Alexander Arnold on the pitch, Klopp decided to give the captaincy to Joe Gomez, who although he is the most senior player in the squad with more years than any other player, does not have the same hierarchy as the Egyptian.

<strong>The reason</strong>

According to various reports, the decision for Salah not to be one of the captains of the team and even behind Andy Robertson as the third captain is due to his personality, as people close to him and the team point out that he is not someone who talks a lot in the dressing room or makes constant speeches, only demonstrates his leadership on the pitch.
