A member of Liverpool's first team between 1993 and 2001, Englishman Robbie Fowler has assured in recent hours that the Basque Unai Emery would be the perfect heir for the current Reds coach, the German Jürgen Klopp. Currently, the Gipuzkoan manages Aston Villa. "The biggest compliment I can pay Unai Emery is that I think he is one of the few managers who would be up to the challenge of replacing Klopp at Liverpool.
But before the gentlemen and ladies of the Midlands and Anfield get angry, I am not suggesting that Emery is going to leave Birmingham for Merseyside or that Klopp may be on the verge of leaving (…) I was already a big admirer of Emery when Arsenal asked him to succeed Arsene Wenger. At the Emirates it didn't go as expected, and I still believe that a lot of that was due to a lack of basic respect shown towards Emery, simply because he didn't arrive with the same command of the English language as a member of the Royal Family. Now at Aston Villa he is showing that football is truly universal," he said on HITC.
The current Aston Villa coach has a great resume behind him, which few current coaches share. And he wants to continue expanding. With 22 points out of a possible 30, and a year after taking the reins of this squad, Aston Villa has managed to get into the fight for the top positions in the Premier League. All this after the sudden departure of Unai Emery from a Villarreal team that is still taking a while to recover from this goodbye.
The Basque coach guided the Groguets to the 2021 Europa League and his team to the Champions League semifinals the following year. While now he has been able to relaunch the Birmingham villains who a year ago were fighting to escape relegation. The coach could also battle this season for another European competition such as the Conference League, where his team are one of the favorites. This after having won the Europa League with Sevilla three consecutive times (from 2014 to 2016) and having been a finalist in 2019 with Arsenal. While Jürgen Klopp earns around 18 million, Unai Emery could ask for up to 10 million, which would be double what he now earns at Aston Villa.
