What was an open secret is now official. Jordan Henderson has left Liverpool and signed for Al Ettifaq for the next three seasons. The English midfielder, a key player in the Jürgen Klopp era and captain of the team, is ending his time with the Reds after 12 seasons.
"It's hard to put these last 12 years into words and it's even harder to say goodbye. I will always be a Red. Until the day I die. Thank you for everything. You'll never walk alone'," he posted on social media. Henderson joined Anfield from Sunderland under Kenny Dalglish in 2011. Since then, he has made 492 appearances, scoring 33 goals and dishing out 52 assists.
His legacy is enormous. He leaves with eight trophies and had the privilege of lifting the 2019 Champions League and the long-awaited 2020 Premier League, the club's first since the club's name change in 1992. The midfielder says goodbye to European football and joins the list made up of Benzema, Kanté, Firmino or Rubén Neves as new additions to the Saudi league. There he will be coached by Steven Gerrard, with whom he spent four years at Liverpool.
According to various reports, Al Ettifaq paid around 13 million to Liverpool to sign Jordan Henderson who was due to finish his contract next year. This amount is below the 18 million Liverpool paid Sunderland in 2011 to sign him at the request of then manager Kenny Dalsglish. On that occasion the most expensive purchase was Stewart Downing from Aston Villa for whom they paid 22 million.
